How bulk filament pricing actually works

Bulk comes in three shapes, and stores rarely label which one you are looking at. Multi-kg spools (3kg, 5kg, sometimes 10kg of one color on one spool) are the simplest: fewer spool changes, one material, per-kg prices usually 20-35% below a 1kg spool. Pre-packed bundles (a 5×1kg multi-color pack, priced as one item) get similar per-kg savings with color variety, but you are committing to the pack's color mix. MOQ listings (minimum order quantity: pick any N spools from a page to unlock the price) are how wholesale pricing reaches hobbyists, and where the deepest per-kg discounts live once N gets past 6 or so.

Every listing below is tagged with which shape it is, and our per-kg math always uses the real total weight, so a "5kg bundle" and a "1kg spool with MOQ 5" compare honestly. The Filament Price Index tracks the market-wide bulk curve daily if you want the bigger picture.

Bulk PLA filament

PLA is where bulk buying pays off most, because the volume exists at every size: 3kg and 5kg single-color spools, 5-pack and 10-pack bundles, and MOQ listings up to genuine wholesale lots. Right now the market-wide bulk curve bottoms out around 8kg per order, where PLA lands near half the price of a single 1kg spool; beyond that, even 50-100kg lots only shave off another euro or so per kilo. SUNLU and JAYO run the most aggressive multi-pack pricing, Elegoo's 3kg spools are the common print-farm workhorse, and the deepest MOQ discounts usually come from AliExpress storefronts, which is exactly where you want our quarantine checks between you and the checkout button. Every listing below passed them.

Bulk PETG

Bulk PETG tracks a euro or two below bulk PLA at the same volumes, and the same 5-9kg sweet spot applies. One practical note: PETG is more moisture-sensitive than PLA, so only buy volumes you can store sealed; the storage guide covers keeping a 10kg stash printable.

ABS, ASA, TPU & More

Engineering materials get bulk options too, just fewer of them: ABS and ASA both bottom out around 5kg per order, TPU bulk mostly means 3-5kg lots, and nylon or PC bulk listings are rare enough that when one appears below market it is worth a hard look. Anything suspicious never makes this page.

FAQ

How much can I save buying in bulk?
Bulk PLA runs $8-10/kg vs $15-20/kg for single spools, 40-50% less. PETG is similar at $8-12/kg bulk vs $14-25/kg retail.
What is MOQ?
Minimum Order Quantity. You must buy at least N spools from a listing to get the bulk price. MOQ 6 means pick any 6 colors/variants from that page.
How much filament should I buy at once?
The market data says around 8kg per order for PLA and 5-9kg for PETG: that is where the per-kg price gets within touching distance of true wholesale, without the storage burden. Going from 8kg to a 50-100kg lot typically saves only another 5-10% per kilo. We publish the full bulk curve, updated daily, on the Filament Price Index.
Is a 3kg spool better than three 1kg spools?
Per kilogram, almost always: a 3kg spool typically runs 20-30% cheaper than three singles of the same material, and you swap spools two fewer times mid-project. The trade-offs are one color instead of three and a heavier spool your holder needs to handle. For print farms and prototyping, multi-kg spools win; for variety printing, a bundle usually fits better.
How should I store large quantities?
Airtight bins, rechargeable desiccant, under 20% RH, first-in-first-out rotation. See our storage guide for material-specific targets.
