ABS Filament Guide

- Needs an enclosure at 230-250°C nozzle, 100°C+ bed, warps aggressively in open air
- Acetone smoothable to a near-injection-mould finish, the main reason to pick ABS over ASA
- Handles 100°C+ heat, proven industrial material (LEGO bricks, car interiors)
- Emits styrene fumes, so print with ventilation or a carbon filter, not in bedrooms
ABS is the plastic in LEGO bricks and automotive interiors. It's strong, heat-resistant, and acetone-smoothable, so you can vapor-smooth prints to a near-injection-mould finish. But it warps badly without an enclosure, emits styrene fumes, and ASA now does the same job without the UV degradation.
Use ABS when you need acetone smoothing or you're replacing an existing ABS part. For new designs, pick ASA, which is the better version.

The ABS Grade Ladder
ABS grades are mostly about taming its two vices, warping and fumes, or pushing its one virtue, heat resistance, further. Prefixes work like everywhere else: HS = speed-tuned, HT = higher heat deflection, r = recycled; + usually means a low-warp reformulation rather than just toughening. The ladder, with live listings:

Classic ABS: ~100°C heat tolerance, sandable, acetone-smoothable, and determined to warp off an open-frame printer. Budget for an enclosure or buy something else; there is no third option at part sizes beyond a keycap.ABS+
Low-warp reformulations, led by eSUN’s: noticeably calmer on the bed, slightly less smelly, same end-use properties. About one ABS listing in five. If you are buying ABS in 2026 and not chasing a spec sheet, buy this tier.HS-ABS (+)
Speed-tuned ABS for enclosed CoreXY machines (Hyper and Rapid lines). The speed is real, but chamber temperature still decides whether big parts survive, so this grade rewards a sealed enclosure more than raw travel speed.HT-ABS
Pushes heat deflection above standard ABS, toward 110°C and beyond. For parts that sit near motors, hotends, or in engine bays. Check the datasheet per brand; “HT” spans a wide range here.ABS-CF / ABS-GF
Fiber-filled ABS: stiffer, more dimensionally stable, much less warp-prone than plain ABS. Glass-filled versions trade a little stiffness for a lower price. Hardened nozzle, enclosure still recommended.ABS-FR
Flame-retardant ABS (UL94 V-0 at the good end). Electronics enclosures, appliance parts, anything a safety reviewer will look at.r-ABS
