Methodology
The SpoolHound Filament Price Index (SFPI) is a fixed-base-weight (Laspeyres) price index, computed separately for each region in its own currency. It is built every day from the active filament listings we find online across the web.
What's in it
Every price we track — dozens of retailers and manufacturer stores (Bambu Lab, Polymaker, SUNLU, Elegoo, Fillamentum and many more), affiliate or not. Standard single spools only (750 g–1.25 kg; no bundles, no minimum-order listings), normalised to price per kilogram. The basket covers PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, nylon (PA) and polycarbonate, weighted by each material's listing share on the base date and held fixed thereafter, so the index measures pure price movement rather than shifts in what's listed.
Average, not median
The index tracks a 10% trimmed mean (the average after dropping the cheapest and most expensive 10% of listings). A plain median is too coarse for markets that cluster on round price points — it can read as unchanged for weeks while prices genuinely move underneath. The trimmed mean stays robust to outliers but reflects the real market. The "typical range" columns show the 25th–75th percentile spread.
What's excluded, and why
Amazon listings are excluded entirely: Amazon's terms forbid price-history tracking, and a market index has to be built on prices we can stand behind. Everything published here is an aggregate — a median or quartile across many sellers — never any single seller's price. Cells with fewer than five listings are omitted as noise. Regional figures are converted between currencies using the daily ECB reference rate.
The data behind it
Refreshed daily across Europe, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia, from 20+ stores. Base 100 is set to 2026-07-06; the index rebases to the first full calendar month once enough history accumulates.
